Why Teachers Are Paid So Little In The U.S.

by MOINSBD

Teachers earn nearly 20% less than other professionals with similar education and experience, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In many states, their wages are below the living wage, forcing teachers to seek secondary jobs to supplement their income or leave the profession all together.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of remote learning, the challenges faced by educators has become increasingly demanding. Some organizations are trying to redesign teacher pay structures in some of the 13,500 public school districts nationwide. Watch the video above to learn more about why teachers are paid so little and how to fix that.

It is because they only work 9 months out of the year. They also get a week off in the fall and a week in the Spring. In an addition, They get 2 weeks off around Christmas and New Years. Teachers get good pay for the time they actually are working.

Teachers are well paid. 15 weeks of vacation, benefits, job security, and pensions. Many retire in their early 50s. Let's compare this to most other jobs

You have to consider that teachers sign to do only 9 months of the year, and they are paid for 7 hours, instead of 8 hours a day. Am I correct or not?

When you take into account all the time teacher are off the job, they are properly classified as part time employees.

when I was in school in the 80s and 90s, teachers were mostly obese middle age women who weren't overly bright and couldn't/wouldn't do any physical labor and probably couldn't hold a job in the private sector. thank goodness it isn't like that now.

Because they work in a profession with more teachers that there are jobs. That is how economies work you idiots. Supply vs demand. And quite frankly America's teachers have such a dismal recor4d of teaching our children the basics (their job) that they should all have their salaries cut in half. Maybe that will wake them up.

Most Teachers DON'T Deserve more Money. They are Not to the level of expertise as other Educated Professionals. I raised 5 children and we experienced bad and weak teachers. They are Successful Professionals. The Teacher's Union is Screwing our children with games. Pick another profession. Pay Teacher's that are GOOD, by Real measures of Personal Evaluation like other professions. Fire Underperformers quick.

I don’t know is the low paid a cause or affect. Is it low pay caused it to attracted less quality teacher? Or teacher are not teaching so they should pay less? In my experience, all school before college are junk, they doesn’t teach anything. My English teacher in High School make us draw and doing play. They should of teach writing and grammar which highly needed when kids actually go to work. I’m sorry but friend I know cannot survive engineering career go into teaching. Plus, government give too much job protection and teachers does not upgrading their skill and give too much retirement benefits. I think educators need to be fix for our next generation.

Simply Because people keep signing up for it. If people stoped applying for these positions the states would have to go up.

Teachers are not underpaid. Ask them for their contract and look at how many hours they are contracted to work and how much they are getting paid. Simple math. Also take a look at their benefits

Have any of y’all actually searched the yearly published salaries of your local district? All this government work is public since your tax dollar is paying.
In my local in Texas they get paid about 65k with many varying bonus depending on extracurricular activities they are in charge of and so on. They get paid well! IMO government work has never paid bad, irresponsibility is something else.

I'm a teacher and I've taught for 29 years, and when I used to live in Ashburn, Virginia in 2004 I was being paid about $20,000 a month and only had 12 years of experience back then (pretty high), now I live in Texas and get paid almost 5,000 a month, I might go back to Virginia soon.
